SAM is an intensive music academy for promising young string players and pianists age 14-24, designed to develop and refine the skills needed for excellence in solo and ensemble performance. A limited number of woodwind players will be accepted.

The weekly schedule consists of alternating days of private lessons, coached ensemble sessions, and masterclasses with outstanding faculty members – the internationally-renowned artists of the concurrent Mammoth Lakes Music Festival.

Students' daily schedules include individual practice time, chamber orchestra rehearsals, and student ensemble rehearsals, as well as a language class and faculty concerts at night. While this is an intensive course, students will also enjoy the uniquely beautiful mountain setting in organized outdoor activities.

Students study and perform prepared solo repertoire like sonatas and concertos, as well as trios, quartets, and larger ensembles from the chamber music literature covering styles from baroque to contemporary. The development of sight-reading skills is emphasized in the ensemble playing.

Students will be placed in ensembles commensurate with their playing level and available instrumentation.

Students younger than 14 may apply and will be admitted upon faculty evaluation if their playing level is commensurate with the requirements for the course, and if accompanied by an adult for the duration of the course. Students younger than 14 may also be invited to attend the "SAM Jr." course.
